Whether you are in the workplace or enjoying a hobby in your spare time, hearing protection is so important when dealing with loud noises.
What equipment can protect my hearing?
There are many types of hearing protection, for example, earplugs, earmuffs and canal caps. All of these protect your ears from loud noise by reducing the level of sound reaching your ears. If you're exposed to unavoidable noise, you should use earplugs or earmuffs.
How do ear protectors work?
Whichever ear protection you choose, they should provide enough attenuation to protect your hearing. Usually, the packaging from the product you’ve lets you know the level of attenuation that they provide for different frequencies. The majority of ear protection products offer the standard amount of protection from the more common damaging frequencies (4-8kHz).
Which should I choose?
If you’re looking for long term use ear plugs are the way forward, however, if noise levels are high then we would recommend choosing some high attenuation ear defenders. For very high noise levels, ear defenders and earplugs can be worn together. This usually provides an extra 10 to 15dB protection than if either is used alone.
